In personal development, we often face an invisible inner barrier reminiscent of the infamous glass ceiling seen in the professional world. This “inner glass ceiling” limits our growth, caps our potential, and obstructively mediates our aspirations to live an internally and externally authentic life. The inner glass ceiling is a metaphor for the mental and emotional construct composed of early conditioning, fears, societal expectations, self-protection, and even self-imposed perceptions of our own potential. It inhibits us from realizing our true selves, sabotaging our attempts to live a life that is a true reflection of our values and beliefs.
One common manifestation of this internal barrier is the gap between our “inner intention” and our “external actions.” We all have internalized narratives and expectations that dictate what we should be doing, how we should behave, and what roles we should fill. These ‘shoulds’ are often inconsistent with what we want deep inside. The result is a life lived in response to the expectations of others or societal norms rather than our true desires and values.
Breaking Through the Inner Glass Ceiling™ is designed to empower women to confront and overcome their unique inner glass ceiling. It mines the gaps to foster personal growth, authenticity, and resilience while providing them with the tools to navigate life’s challenges in alignment with their true selves.
In my years of training and coaching women, I have found some themes that come up quite a bit. However, this is not linear, and each person’s inner glass ceiling is more of a unique constellation of experiences and interpretations. These interpretations are shaped by the authority figures in our lives and our cultures’ traditions; we then adapt in the outer world to these dynamics in order to fit in and be loved.
The Inner Glass Ceiling™ is constructed in a gradual way, usually outside of our awareness. Here are just a few of the common themes that have come up in my coaching and training programs. Remember, you are unique. Our goal is to identify and make the invisible visible, not label.
Putting everyone else's needs first and ignoring your own.

If you constructed a role to be the peacemaker in relationships, fear of conflict can be a trigger.

The desire to "fit in" can eclipse the willingness, and the courage it takes, to step into a unique set of gifts and talents.

As a corporate Leadership and Organizational Development professional, Terri Altschul was accustomed to offering best-in-class programs. The first module of “Breaking Through the Inner Glass Ceiling™” will give you an in-depth introduction to the program’s core activities and objectives, setting the foundation for your growth journey. You are encouraged to connect and get to know each other better, creating a greater sense of safety and vulnerability.
We start strong in this as you create a map of your inner glass ceiling using the profound Immunity to Change™ technology. In this session, you’ll discover the unique challenge in your Inner Glass Ceiling™ and uncover behaviors that sabotage your stated goals, competing commitments, core fears, and assumptions about the consequences if your worst fears are realized.
In this module, you’ll create a one-year Progress Plan by incorporating data from (1) a timeline of your Inner Glass Ceiling™ and (2) data you gather about the impact of your Inner Glass Ceiling™ through self-observations and feedback from others. This plan will incorporate milestones for your journey, including self-care.
In this module, you’ll learn about the default responses programmed into your nervous system, identifying the hooks and triggers that keep the Inner Glass Ceiling™ out of your awareness. You’ll design carefully crafted experiments to meet those automated responses in the moment and turn them into choiceful actions. As we progress, these strategies will lead you to rewrite your narratives and see results in real time.
Sustaining the change of Breaking the Inner Glass Ceiling™ requires us to have the inner resources to anchor ourselves when we’re thrown off balance. One powerful technique to do this is by anchoring into your core values. This can mean when making choices that deviate from external expectations, you can feel confident and grounded in your choices. You’ll take an assessment to identify the rank order of your core values and identify those values you need to develop to support your continued transformation process.
In this module, you’ll discover how the way you speak and communicate reflects your Inner Glass Ceiling™. It will equip you with the necessary tools to work with fear-based triggers and fight/flight responses so that you will communicate more effectively, even in the face of your worst fear. This rich module will expand your options for meeting and handling personal challenges, better-resolving issues/conflicts, and facilitating issue/conflict resolution.y
The Inner Glass Ceiling™ manifests as a “created” self in the outer world. It is the self we constructed as children that we believed we needed to be in order to be accepted, understood and loved. This created self is disconnected from our true self, where our deepest desires and innate gifts reside. In this module, we will focus on how you can maintain the connection with your true self through self-compassion and self-care. We honor and appreciate all the parts of ourselves.
